Amazing Inventions

Many incredible gadgets have been created by the minds of intellectual geniuses, dreamers, and people who are just plain good at building things. It seems like the world is never lacking in new creations designed to make our everyday lives a little more fun – or easier.

One such gadget caught my eye this morning. I’d heard a lot of news about the tricorder (a kind of medical scanner capable of reading and recording various life signs) from Star Trek being developed into a real working device – well over a decade ago – but lost track of the topic over the years. Apparently Dr. Peter Jansen, from McMaster University in Canada, has succeeded in making a real functional prototype of the fictional tricorder.

Experimenting in the kitchen

Seeing as how Spring is finally here, I’ve felt inspired to do more cooking and baking. I find that if I make everything myself then I don’t have to worry about food allergies or trans fats. Most of the things I make contain absolutely no milk products or casein (the protein found in milk products) and little to no sugar. Of course, if I’m cooking/baking for my husband or a friend, sometimes cheese and milk are necessary. Creating things in the kitchen is a great way to kill stress and use up any energy surplus that I might have at the end of the day so I love doing it, even if I can’t eat the finished product.

Here are a couple of pictures of things that I’ve baked recently.

Easter bunnies and pecan pies

Have you ever had a craving that just wouldn’t go away? A craving that you can’t possibly fulfill because doing so would mean returning to your home country and raiding the nearest supermarket. Well, I’ve had such a terrible craving for a pecan pie that it’s been driving me nuts! (Sorry, bad pun) What is a pecan? It’s a rather large nut that is extremely difficult to find in Japan, unless you’ve been to Costco. And pecan pies just don’t exist in Japan so… I’ve decided to make my own.

Seeing as how Easter is fast approaching and it isn’t so easy to find chocolate Easter Bunnies in Japan, I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the perfect excuse for me to make a pecan pie.
