Let’s Exercise For Summer!

English and English

What type of English do you speak? This probably sounds like a really odd question but I’ve been giving it a lot of thought lately, especially since I’ve started to take an interest in British TV programs. Believe me, the English used in a BBC drama is quite different from that of their American counterparts. I guess that I really ought to appreciate my mixed upbringing and exposure to all sorts of unusual words and phrases.

私は久々の連休、満喫しました★

久しぶりに家族６人集まったり

な〜んにもせずにのんびりしたり

教えてください！

みなさんお久しぶりです！

最近よく経験することで悩みがあります。

みなさんは洋服を買う時に、店員さんがいっぱい話してくることを経験したことありませんか？
シドニーで買い物をする時は日本ほど話してきません（大体は）。普段は挨拶と ‘Are you looking for something in particular?’ か ‘Can I help  you with anything?’　ぐらいです。それに対して私はいつも ‘No, I’m just looking thanks’　と言って一人で店の中をぶらぶら見る。私は一人で見る方が落ち着いて正しい判断が出来る気がするので一人でゆっくり見るのが好きです。

しかし日本で服の買い物をする時ほとんど毎回店員さんが話してきます。
この間も服を見ようとしているときに店員さんが来て私にいっぱい質問しました。「この店は初めてですか？」「何かお探しですか？」「この色が好きなんですか？」そして住んでる場所と仕事まで聞かれました。仕事が英会話先生だと言うとまたそれで私の人生の歴史や家族について色々聞いてきました。そして、店を出たかったんですが、店員さんが話していたのでなかなか出ることが出来なかったんです。
得になにも探しているわけでもなく、見てるだけだと伝えても、次から次と色んな服を進めてくる場合も多いです。
あと、当たり前のことしか言わない店員さんもいます。「新作」のサインの下にある服を見てると「これ、新作なんですよー」と言ったり。Tシャツにねこの絵のプリントがあったら「これ、ねこの絵がプリントされてるんです」と言ったり。突っ込みたくなりませんか？「わかってまんがな！」と頭の中で叫ぶんですが店員さんは真剣なんでリアクションに困ります。
こういう場合、皆さんはどうするのですか？
私は無愛想に見られたくないし、無礼にもなりたくないので「私をほっといて下さい」をどう良い感じに言えばいいですか？
店員さん達ももちろん仕事をしているだけで、声をかけると万引き防止にもなるので、店員さんの行動を批判するつもりはないんです。私も接客の経験があるんで店員さんの気持ちも分かります。ただ、私の個人的な情報をあまりべらべら喋りたくないということと、いっぱい進められてくるとかえって何が買いたいのかが分からなくなったり、もうその店に入りたくなくなったりしちゃいます。

何か、良い方法・言い方がありましたら是非教えて下さい！

An incredible story

2 or 3 weeks ago I came across a most disturbing story on the Internet. Within about an hour of reading it, I received emails from some of my friends in Canada, expressing their astonishment over that very same story. It spread like wildfire, appearing on many news channels in both the United States and Canada (along with other countries that I can’t remember) as well as being featured on many prominent news sites. What made this story high profile material? The answer may shock you.

So unhealthy… and yet so addictive

Last year, while I was visiting my family in Toronto, my sister got me into watching this TV show called Pretty Little Liars. At first I resisted the temptation to dive into a series full of teenage angst with a preppy looking high school as the main backdrop. Considering the supposed ages (I use the word ‘supposed’ because most of the actors are at least a decade older than the characters they’re playing) of the main cast, it didn’t really seem like a show I could relate to. But, as it turns out, the show is driven by suspense and a cunning plot that isn’t overly burdened by the high school setting.
